ALIVENESS :: Attention, Play, Culture, and Our Capacity to Experience
Attention Play Culture and Our Capacity to Experience
How much of the world are you still capable of experiencing?
Brains use heuristics to save time and energy. Familiar things get compressed into quick approximations. Useful, yes. Final, no.
Neuroplasticity means perception can be trained. Attention can widen again. What became background can recover shape, texture, and meaning.
This book is a path to doing just that.A return to the magic of simply being here.
Jugglers have a word for that instant.Apex.There. That’s the apex. You were already watching it. Now you know what to look for.
A clean throw creates an easy future.A bad throw creates a correction. And the correction teaches you something.
the world gains resolution
Three balls become
events.
At first, a ball is just moving. Learn the arc and the same throw opens into height, timing, drift, crossing point, correction, apex. A musician hears timing where somebody else hears a song. A mechanic catches a clue in the engine before the rest of us know what sounds wrong.
Distinctions give attention somewhere to go. With practice, more of what was already happening becomes available.
when a world gets thin
You know what it feels like when a world gets thinner.
Familiar things recede.
We get efficient. We often answer that thinness by asking for more. Louder. Faster. Newer. Stranger.
With practice, attention can return.
And with it, magic.
You hear the bass line again. The mountain becomes enormous. The room develops details. The person says something you did not expect. More becomes available.
Wonder does not always require astonishment. Sometimes it is simple recognition: noticing what was here all along.
The sunset can be spectacular and still miss you. Another night, the color catches before you have decided to look.
Sometimes the difference is not the sky.
Our capacity to be moved can change.
Capacity includes practicing the other direction too: letting a looping thought, a worry, or a distraction recede into the background. The point is choice.
Can you enter? Can you stay? Can you leave? Can you return?
stay a second.
A hinge has play in it.
In mechanics, play is the movement allowed inside a constraint, the tiny clearance that lets parts move without binding.
Too little and the hinge sticks. Too much and it rattles. The useful range lives between them.
A minute ago it was a hinge.
Now it has clearance, wear, friction, and play.
Oh, right.
I made this into a book.
A field guide to the world that’s already here, sometimes buried beneath the noise.
ALIVENESS follows attention from the inside out: through perception, skill, bodies, play, other people, culture, care, and the environments that quietly teach us how to participate.
The question is range. What becomes available to experience? What narrows it? What might widen it again?

The Members Only
First Edition.
Circus Folk members get the book in motion: the Members Only First Edition, the audiobook as it develops, and a place inside the refinement process before the public launch.
Read more than 50,000 words out loud and a manuscript starts talking back.
Repetitions announce themselves. Sentences run out of breath. Jokes tell you when they are late. Transitions either carry you or they do not. Beautiful paragraphs occasionally discover they were only beautiful on paper.
Before ALIVENESS becomes its finished public edition, I am going to read the whole thing aloud, chapter by chapter, revise as I go, and listen to the people reading and listening with me. Those readings also become the developing audiobook. Then the finished book can go public in print, ebook, and audio.
THE MEMBERS ONLY FIRST EDITION LIVES INSIDE CIRCUS FOLK.
- the complete current manuscript
- the narrated ALIVENESS Manifesto
- the audiobook in development, chapter by chapter
- revisions and behind-the-page notes
- a seat inside the feedback loop while the text and audio are still being refined

ALIVENESS is a
Circus Folk project.
Written by Ryan Today for Circus Folk.
I founded Circus Folk and serve as its executive director. I wrote ALIVENESS as part of that work: helping people remain able to participate in culture, and looking closely at the attention, play, learning, care, belonging, and conditions that keep human beings available to one another and to the cultures they make.
Circus Folk owns the royalty rights to ALIVENESS. When the finished edition is published, its royalties support the organization and the work around it.
